4 TV Programmes to Get Obsessed with This Summer

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

We’ve been a little bit hashtag-blessed with the weather for a couple of weeks, but of course when you live in the UK you know not to get too hyped about a long, hot summer. The chances are that there are still plenty of wet weekends ahead of us, so I thought it was worth putting together a little guide to my favourite TV shows at the moment.

These are all relatively new programmes or things with new series airing right now, so however you watch your shows – be it iPad, laptop or the new 4K TV Panasonic are offering – hopefully you’ll discover something new.

Love Island

I mean, obviously. It’s the one that everyone on the timeline is talking about – and one of my no.1 bloggers Claudia has even made a list of 23 Signs Your Love Island Addiction is Getting Out of Control, which I recommend for some lols and rofls (though it’s all actually 100% true of my life – tragic). If you’ve been living under a rock and don’t know the premise, then the basis is a load of fit people thrown together in a villa and forced to couple up to get through the programme. They essentially all pretend to be falling madly in love with each other, while also trying to slyly get with other people who they actually fancy (*cough* Amber *cough*). As well as being an entertaining watch, it’s also got a lot of potential as a drinking game – simply drink any time someone says “muggy”, “I’m not putting my eggs in one basket” or “On paper you’re my type” and you’ll be RUINED.

The Handmaid’s Tale

A bit more high-brow, Channel 4 recently picked up the new American series The Handmaid’s Tale. Based on the novel, it’s a drama set in a dystopian future where mass infertility has led to fertile lower- and middle-class women being enslaved as child bearers for the elite. I know that this does NOT sound like a barrel laughs, and to be fair, it’s not. But it is fascinating, dark and tense; and the modern adaptation of Attwood’s novel makes it all feel very current (for example, in one episode they blame Tinder for the demise of society – yeah, tell us something we don’t know guys).

The Keepers

If you’ve been looking for a real crime documentary to fill the gap left by Making a Murderer, then The Keepers is it. Also on Netflix, this is a seven-part series that explores the unsolved murder of a nun in Baltimore in 1969. The incident is wrapped up in a larger scandal relating to a local priests’ sexual abuse of children and a huge cover-up conspiracy from both the church and local police. It’s heavy going and harrowing, but it’s well worth a watch.

Ex on the Beach

Aaaand straight back to the low-brow we go. I’ve been watching MTV’s Ex On the Beach since the first series, and haven’t missed an episode. It’s similar to Love Island in that the formula is fit people + villa + alcohol = snogging; however, this has the added twist of putting the people’s exes into the villa with them for added fisticuffs. It’s always full of screaching lunatics and always a big huge lol (if you’re easily amused like me).

These are my current TV recommendations, but is there anything new I’m missing out on? If so, let me know in the comments!

This post was written with a little help from Panasonic, but all trashy TV opinions are unfortunately 100% my own.

I’ve been sticking to Netflix at the mo (the new series of Orange is the New Black is AMAZING), and I’ve missed out on all the Love Island hype. I’ve heard a lot about The Handmaid’s Tale though, and I really want to get stuck into that

I’m SO behind on OITNB, I really need to catch up! Handmaid’s Tale is definitely worth watching – it’s a shame it’s not on Netflix for binging though xx

Literally that’s why I never bothered reading the book, haha! Now I’m definitely going to give it a read too 🙂 xx

I’ve not managed to get into Love Island this year as we’ve been binge watching The Blacklist, which is one of my favourite TV shows ever, it’s on catch up so can watch whenever, but completely recommend. I’m up to date with EOTB though, got to have a healthy amount of trash tv in your life 🙂

I always watch Ex on the Beach but haven’t quite gotten into Love Island yet. However, A Handmaids Tale is an amazing programme and brilliantly acted!
