Too Faced Born This Way Foundation | Review

Too Faced Born This Way Foundation | Review You know those brands that you just have a crush on; whose packaging and product names and marketing and EVERYTHING just make you weak at the knees in the way no man can? Too Faced is one of those brands for me. I’ve had my crush on them ever since trying their Better Than Sex mascara yonks ago, but since then I’ve always just lusted at them from afar. From the Melted lipsticks to the Sweet Peach palette, I’ve had so many of their products on my makeup wishlist – but the one at the very top has always been the Born This Way foundation. AND I’VE FINALLY GOT IT. So, has it been worth the wait?

Too Faced Born This Way 'Nude' ReviewTo give a bit of background, I’m a fan of full coverage foundation (#TeamSlapItOn) and although I’ve tried a few foundations over the last year, I’m a fairly loyal re-purchaser of NARS Sheer Glow. My only real skin complaint is an oily t-zone, so I usually use a mattifying primer (current one of choice: the sticky beast that is Seventeen’s Stay Time) before my foundation and I’m good to go. Too Faced’s Born This Way has therefore always sounded right up my street, as it’s also medium-full coverage, is oil-free and promises “naturally radiant skin”. But does it live up to these bold, bold claims of wonderment?

Guess what? It does. Sorr-yyyyyy if that makes for a less interesting review, but Born This Way really is just as nice as you’ve heard it is. Fans of Sheer Glow will definitely like it, as I find the finish really similar – radiant and seamless. I do have a couple of – not quite gripes, as I’m not really bothered by them, so – comments worth mentioning. First of all, I would say that the foundation is more on the medium spectrum of medium-to-full. I always go on about my nose being the true test of a foundation’s coverage as it’s often red and blotchy and generally disagreeable, and I don’t think Born This Way covers it as amazingly as I’d hope. It definitely needs to be built up more than other medium-full coverage formulas that I’ve tried, BUT on areas that don’t need as much coverage it’s a total dream with one layer.

Secondly, this is probably just me not understanding how things work, but I assumed that oil-free would = a less oily me. Sadly, that’s not the case and by lunchtime my nose is MUCH oilier with Born This Way than it was with my previous routine. I also think it breaks down around the oilier parts of my face, e.g. those bits by the side of the nose, sooner than Sheer Glow does too. It’s not too much of a problem as most people have to apply powder or touch up a bit throughout the day, but it’s just not really what I was expecting from an oil-free formula.

My final point about Born This Way is that application method made a big difference for me. The first few days I used my oval foundation brush from Makeup Revolution, but I didn’t think it was applying quite flawlessly enough. I switched back to my beauty blender and the finish and coverage improved straight away. I’ve found this SO often now when I try a new foundation, so I always recommend trying a few different applicators (sponge, brush, fingers) before writing a formula off as no good. Not that I think anyone would ever write off Born This Way though, as it really is such a nice foundation.

Have you tried Too Faced’s Born This Way, or would you like to? Let me know in the comments!

Looks really nice, I’ve been wanting to try this one for a while! I have the same problem with an oily t-zone, plus I always find my nose difficult to cover. I think before this one I’ll try NARS Sheer Glow as I’ve heard better things about that one!

I do love NARS Sheer Glow, but if you wanted to try this then I’ve found a setting spray has worked wonders for the t-zone problem 🙂 xx

I personally love this foundation, as it’s great for my dry skin. Sorry it disappointed you though!

I really like this foundation & it suits my dry skin well. Although it’s oil-free, it contains coconut water, which is why it works well for my skin but I can see why that might not be great for oily skin xx

Ahh I didn’t know it had coconut water, how interesting! On the non-oily parts of my face it is gorgeous so I can see why you like it 🙂 xx

I haven’t tried this foundation yet. I have oily skin so I prefer to have oil-free foundations, there’s no need to add extra oil to the skin right? 🙂 It is bad to hear that it didn’t stop your face getting oily :/ I think I will skip that foundation!

Well I’ve just started using a setting spray again and I’ve got to say the excess oiliness isn’t a problem anymore 🙂 So I think you might get on pretty well with it after all! xx

Great post! Guess I’m skipping this foundation since I’ve heard nothing good about it for people with oily skin. 🙁 Do you have any foundation recommendations for oily skin? x

Hi Caryl, if it helps then I’ve actually started using a setting spray with this now and it helps keep the oil at bay for much longer 🙂 Otherwise though, I’ve loved Lancome’s Teint Idole and Clarin’s Everlasting Foundation in the past for super-matte finishes! xx
