5 Reasons Why Carrie Bradshaw is a Chuffing Idiot

Carrie 1

Every now and then you read a blog post that’s so utterly brilliant you have to praise it, and then immediately decide to steal the idea. Jenn from Photo-Jenn recently wrote a post entitled My Love-Hate Relationship with Sex and the City where she details every single reason why Carrie Bradshaw is a bloody moron in the first Sex and the City film. I wholeheartedly agreed with every point and it reminded me of all the other reasons I have for hating Carrie.

Now, don’t get me wrong – I love Sex and the City. I have most of the series’ on DVD and re-watch them regularly. Interestingly, when I first watched all of the episodes when I was about 15/16 I actually really liked Carrie. In a discussion with a friend, we even decided that I was ‘the Carrie’ of our group. At the time, I was really pleased with this; now I realised that it was my friend’s way of saying “You’re a massive bellend”.

In this post I will document all of the main things that annoy me about Carrie Bradshaw.

Carrie 41. How She Is An Awful Friend

Carrie Bradshaw is first and foremost a truly terrible friend. You might not notice this on first watching, but you start to notice that every single scene where Miranda, Samantha and Charlotte have bothered to join this little idiot for brunch or cocktails revolves around Carrie’s drama of the day (which is usually stupid). Whenever any of the others try to talk about any of their life problems – which include divorce, pregnancy, cheating and, y’know, CANCER – Carrie always manages to dive in with one of her quips and bring it back round to her. If she was my friends I would definitely lose my temper and ram my brioche down her throat.

Also, do not get me started on the episode where she falls out with Charlotte because Charlotte won’t lend her an insane amount of money to make up for her years of being a financial disaster. Piss off Carrie, whack your shoes on eBay and stop being such a bitch.

Carrie 32. How She Keeps Going Back to Big

Putting my personal dislike of Big aside (what are we meant to find attractive about him exactly?) I think Carrie and Big can singlehandedly be blamed for a whole generation of women constantly going back to damaging relationships and horrible exes. The decision to have them ultimately end up together was a terrible one. All it told us was ‘oh, you know that man that’s quite mean to you and never commits and makes you cry and picks you up and drops you again and gets married to someone who isn’t you and then cheats on that person with you and causes you to cheat on your boyfriend too and then doesn’t even want to marry you and obviously just hates your effing guts? Yeah, just stick with that – because it will all work out in the end!’

Just… no. Where is the logic, writers. Where is the humanity.

3. How She Treats Lovely Aidan

In conjunction with the above point, one of the things that makes Carrie Bradshaw a huge chuffing idiot is how horrible she is to Lovely Aidan. Lovely Aidan, with his dog and his leather jackets and his sander and chisel… He is the perfect human man, and what does she do? She fucks him over completely. Loads. First she cheats on him with Big – which I cannot even comprehend – and then vigorously pursues him to get him back. Even though he makes it quite clear how emotionally damaged she left him (I defy you to not sob at the “YOU BROKE MY HEART!” scene), she decides to still force her way back into his life and treat him as a plaything.

After being a pissy bitch for ages over the fact that he is not 100% over the affair, and screaming “You have to forgive me!” at least thirty times in one scene (reality check Carrie you harlot: he doesn’t), she then actually decides, once he’s forgiven her and been lovely and proposed, that actually she can’t even be arsed to wear the ring properly, or have to spend any time with him, or be nice to him.

She also thinks it’s perfectly reasonable to stay friends with Big. Who she CHEATED on Aidan with. Which brings me on to my point I feel most vehemently about:

Carrie 6

4. HOW SHE LETS BIG COME TO THE CABIN

This is an absolutely atrocious Carrie moment in the long string of atrocious Carrie moments that essentially makes up the entire franchise that is Sex and the City. Aiden has been nice enough to take her back, forgive her affair, tolerate her friendship with fellow-affairee, AND bring her for a lovely little break in his cabin. She spends the whole trip being, unsurprisingly, a mammoth bitch – mainly because there are squirrels. She then has the audacity to invite Big to the cabin. To Aidan’s cabin. To hang out and drink wine.

Carrie, ARE YOU BLOODY MESSIN’?!

Carrie 55. How She Thinks She’s A Wild Horse

For those of you who are lucky enough to be unfamiliar with this scene, Carrie has ended up outside the engagement party of Big and his new fiance, who he actually likes. Rather than taking this as the clear sign it is that she’s a crap person, she instead manages to delude herself that the reason she’s single is because she’s too fabulous. This is because she’s wild, like a horse. She shares this terrible moment with a proper mental horse who starts kicking off on the street and probably ended up being made into glue. I wish Carrie could meet this same fate.

What do you all think of Sex and the City’s leading lady idiot?

STOP. I am howwwling hahaha. You have got it exactly right! I was the same – loved her in the beginning, then started to see the cracks. I think I started seeing her in a different light when I realised how much her sticky-out-tongue-while-she-writes annoyed me. And don’t even get me started on Big… #justiceforaidan!

Hahaha oh my gaaaahd YES – I hate her stupid face when she’s writing. She’s definitely the sort of character you grow to dislike more and more as you watch it, so glad you agree. And can we get #JusticeForAidan trending? 😉 xx

Oh my goodness thank you for pointing that tongue thing out. She is purely “tongue acting” in the latter half of season 5 and all of season 6. It gets to the point where I actually stop watching at the beginning of season 5. In previous seasons she’s actually kind of funny and borderline interesting, but later she just morphs into an annoying twit.

Haha you should join the party and write your own Carrie-hating post, we can turn them into a series 😉 xx

    love it 🙂

Haha thank you – glad so many people share our rage! I wonder if the writers realised they were making her such a massive idiot? xx

Heh, I ended up stumbling upon the horse scene over Christmas, this is brilliant. Carrie was always massively self-obsessed.

    • Claire February 2, 2014 / 9:47 am

Hahahaha I HATE THAT BLOODY SCENE! xx

  4. Vickie February 1, 2014 / 8:26 am

HAHA BRILLIANT! Oh that bit were Aidan’s shouts ‘YOU BROKE MY HEART’…and age just runs off! WHAT! Also when she cheats on him and then runs around the city like a wounded animal wondering why everyone hates her! And she irrational and self centered but…

Got to break it to you girls that’s kind of why I love her, she’s not perfect she’s an normal irrational person with imperfections an all. Also I must also admit and I’m sorry but she also reminds me of myself sooo bad especially with the big thing! Who I happen to love.

And the wild horse thing I call my friends and pull the erm kkkk curly, your girl is lovely Hubble excuse everytime a relationship goes capoot! X

    • Claire February 2, 2014 / 9:49 am

Ahh I can fully understand these feelings and I forgive you for the Carrie love V-V-V-Vickie! I think to an extent they did the right thing by making her very human and irrational – but in my opinion they just took it TOO FAR with Aidan. I think I could forgive her all of the other nonsense if it wasn’t for that :'( xx

Lol I have to agree I do ha how she treated widen, he was a truely wonderful man. I just watched the 1st series again and realised she does bring the whole big thing on herself anyway, she breaks up with because he’s not ready to say he loves her, she should just have been more bloody patient to start with

Yeah absolutely – as much as I don’t like Big she also is a bit of a nightmare. And when she stalks him taking his mum to church hahaha, she is a massive keeno and I’m not surprised he doesn’t think she’s the one :’) xx

Ooooh Claire this is amazing! I was laughing so much. There is so much I agree with! The ‘YOU HAVE TO FORGIVE ME, YOU HAVE TO FORGIVE ME!’ scene -urgh! Yea Carrie, cos that’s how it works!
…why does she shout so much? so. much. A normal person doesn’t need to raise their voice or scream as much as she does!

I still feel there’s more points to make, this may end up being a whole series of posts!

Yes she shouts SO MUCH, was watching the final episodes in Paris the other day and she is just so LOUD, it’s no wonder Aleksandr Petrovsky tries to run away from her and ends up slapping her (which, as a side note, she completely over-dramatises).

We could literally co-write a book on this topic 😉 xx

  7. Kat February 1, 2014 / 5:52 pm

Hahaha this is all so true! To be honest, even though I like the show, I sort of find all of the girls a bit annoying in their own ways! I don’t see the attraction with Big either, ew! I much prefer the Carrie in The Carrie Diaries, if you haven’t heard of it then it’s basically 17/18 year old Carrie’s life and she is so much more likable, it’s hard to believe she’s meant to turn into the bitch that is 30 something Carrie. xx

    • Claire February 2, 2014 / 9:53 am

Yeah I have to agree with you actually, I struggle to pick a favourite out of them. It would probably be Samantha, though sometimes her innuendos just make no sense and I wish she’d shut up too.

I haven’t seen the Carrie Diaries yet but have heard about it, I need to track down some episodes! xx

  10. Nicola June 4, 2014 / 1:14 pm

I laughed out loud throughout this! I probably cant talk because I usually hate the protagonist of any TV series but Carrie is so hateable. Don’t worry Aiden I’ll have you!! xx

Carrie was like a few of the girls I knew in my youth. The type that were stick insect thin and always managed to look good in whatever they wear and always pulled on a night out…..because men came easy to them they didn’t really appreciate men. Carrie was extremely self centred and a total bitch. She wanted Big because Big didn’t always want her. She never really wanted Aiden.

  12. Hamida August 25, 2014 / 1:59 pm

And you forgot she’s an idiot. She says Big’s wife is an idiot when she writes there as their. When Carrie is in a shoe shop with Miranda and they discuss shoes. It turns out she has 100 pairs costing 400 each. Carrie says its 4000$ worth of shoes. Miranda corrects her that it is 40000$. It could have been the down payment on the house Its a huge shock to Carrie and she says she has 40000$ worth of shoes and she’s homeless. She doesn’t know basic calculation. What an idiot woman!

  13. Tracy October 17, 2014 / 12:16 pm

Oh, thank you for this site! I’m going through the repeats for the 100th time and the tongue thing is seriously bugging me. In addition, how someone so self obsessed can land one man after another is beyond me!

  14. Drea June 29, 2017 / 1:13 pm

OMG lol, coming across this really late because I’m rewatchung the series and needed to vent. I just do not understand this old ass woman being so afraid of marriage. She’s almost 40 telling Aiden she’s not ready to be married?! Overreacts to him buying her a new laptop when hers broke, tells him straight up she can’t not see Big again (like why tf is it so important to you to have him in your life). She’s a huge pill and just to add Charlotte is an even bigger idiot for giving in and actually buying her apt.

  15. Liam McNally March 10, 2018 / 11:39 pm

This post made me laugh so much and it’s also incredibly accurate!

You know what scene I HATE so much? The episode where her shoes get stolen. She moans about it on the phone to Miranda, Miranda then starts talking about her problems and Carrie reroutes the conversation back to her.

  16. Diana April 21, 2018 / 4:33 pm

I love this! I totally agree! I still love watching the show. Sometimes you initially don’t like a character, but as you re-watch the series, you “understand” them more and learn to appreciate them. Eventually, even liking them…but the opposite has happened with Carrie! As time goes by and Im seeing clearly how annoying, bratty, bitchy, and selfish Carrie really is as a friend, a girlfriend, and a person in general! I get so mad and aggravated by the way she treated Aiden, it’s so disgusting. And how her friends put up with her selfishness is beyond me. And mostly, I agree with how all the women on the show really grew, yet Carrie stayed the same whiney, spoiled brat…even in SATC 1 & 2 Movies she did too!
