July Glossybox: Or, A Tale of Disappointment & Woe

Glossybox 2

Happy Wednesday darling ones. So, this month I finally caved in to the temptation of Glossybox. As I’m sure all beauty bloggers out there know, Glossybox is a subscription service where each month you receive a box full of beauty goodies in the post. They range from samples to full-size products, and are usually a mixture of make-up and beauty bits.

I’ve always heard mixed things about them, with many bloggers saying they’re not quite as good as they used to be, and others saying that they’re just very hit and miss.  For a mere 10 English pounds (plus an extra couple of quid on P&P – oh, you sneaky P&P), I decided that it was a risk worth taking, especially if it leads me to try out a few new products and brands that I might not otherwise be aware of.

Other people started getting their Glossyboxes over the weekend; as I only subscribed at the end of last week, mine just turned up today. People were SUPER SUPER SUPER excited about this month’s, and have been saying that it’s the best one for a while. In other people’s boxes, I was particularly impressed to see the Sleek lip products and the Essie nail wraps, which I’ve been wanting to try since approximately forever. I crossed my chubby little fingers that I might be lucky enough to receive one of, if not both, of these in my box.

Well, beginner’s luck was nowhere to be frickin’ seen with my first ever Glossybox, as I didn’t get either of them. Here is a little rundown of what I did get though, and my initial impressions of them:

Anatomicals ‘Spray Misty For Me’ Facial Spritz

I think everyone got this in their boxes this month. It’s a cooling spray to apparently help rehydrate and calm the skin. It has a strong lavender smell, that Lauren says smells like her gran. I’ve tried this a couple of times throughout the day and I suppose it is kind of cooling, for like… a second? Then I’m just back to having a big hot face and smelling a bit like a pensioner. Groovy.

Inecto Pure Coconut Refreshion Dry Shampoo

I’m a big fan of dry shampoo, due to a combination of having extensions that are better off with less regular washing, and also being a massive tramp and finding hygiene boring. Batiste has been my go-to dry shampoo for years now, but I’m more than willing to give this one a bash. I’m not too sure about the smell, it’s coconut but with a whiff of something else in there too. Lauren, who is my official smell-identifier of the day, said this one smells like cheap Malibu you might get from Home Bargains.

Ciate Paint Pot

Okay, this one I am really chuffedies with. I’ve heard nothing but good things about Ciate (though we have no idea how to pronounce it, someone help homegirls out?) and the colour looks really nice for summer. I will definitely be giving this a whirl soon.

Coola Mineral Face SPF20 Rose Essence Tint

When I first saw this, I had the urge to throw it out of the window in a fit of pique. “A TINY bottle of sun cream,” the voice in my head raged, “Are you MESSIN’?” Upon closer inspection though, I see that it’s actually slightly tinted. This touch of orange made all the difference to me, and my feelings towards it softened.

Bamboo Style Boho Waves Tousled Texture Mist

Well, there’s a name that I dare you to say after a few vodka-lemos. This little mist is supposed to help achieve ‘effortlessly tousled, “just back from the beach” waves’. To go off on a slight tangent, I don’t know where this myth about looking great at the beach came from. On holiday when I come back from the beach, I am red, sweaty, sandy and my hair has usually become something that vaguely resembles a bird’s nest but less groomed. But anyway, I digress. I’m looking forward to giving this product a go as I’m a fan of a casual wave.

So, a very mixed bag for me with my first Glossybox experience. I’m not blown away, but there are a couple of bits worth having and I still think they’re good value for money. I got my subscription on a rolling monthly basis, so I think I’ll still go ahead and get next month’s box to see if I’ll be more impressed next time.

Let me know in the comments below what came with your Glossyboxes (and also if anyone wants to donate me some nail wraps, then that would be cool).

Aww, too bad your first experience wasn’t a good one! But that’s exactly the problem with these boxes, as good as they seem in theory, that they are quite often a miss too.

Yep, I suppose it’s a ‘you win some you lose some’ moment! Nice to try out new brands and products though 🙂 xx
