Rimmel Scandaleyes Retro Glam Mascara | Review

Whilst waiting for a lift back from Morrison’s the other day (bus wanker probs), I went slightly mad and bought approximately £30 worth of stuff from their beauty section…including this bad boy from Rimmel. I’m a big Rimmel fan and I’m of the opinion that for the basics (eyeliner, powder etc) you can’t go far wrong.

 

Unfortunately, it seems that you can go very far wrong with this mascara. So far that I appear to be in Oz with a koala clinging to my head.

I didn’t want to be a Negative Nancy/Picky Peggy/Angry Annie again after having a couple of not-so-shining reviews recently, but I’m not one for giving a fake review when I’m not keen on a product. SORRY GUYS.  With that in mind, let’s get the positives out of the way since there aren’t really very many with the Scandaleyes Retro Glam Mascara.

1. It definitely is black. Nobody could dispute that this goes on black. Top marks for colour, Rimmel.

And onto the negatives.

1. As you can see from my pictures (anyone HATING the dull weather at the moment? All of my snaps look horrendous!), the head/brush is really thick on the Scandaleyes Retro Glam. I kid you not, it feels like you’re putting on mascara with your finger. Because of the thickness, I find it difficult to work with – particularly when getting into those pesky corners or doing the lower eyelashes. If you’re royally cack-handed like me, this is a big negative.

2. The bristles aren’t great for separating the eyelashes. In fact, this mascara goes on very clumpy. I’m a gal who actually quite likes clumpy mascara but this is way too much – the product gathers on the brush and the bristles do nothing to distribute it evenly. Boo, you whore.

3. In terms of lengthening and thickening, I don’t see anything that remarkable. I just find my eyelashes are full of clumps, I can’t get right into the corners and putting extra coats on just makes the situation worse. Unimpressed.

4. I don’t feel retro or glam when wearing this. I just feel like a fool.

Overall, hugely disappointing from Rimmel. If you’re after a bit more of a budget mascara, I’d recommend investing in their Lash Accelerator Endless – it is one of the best mascaras I’ve used in a while and it’s much better to work with. I actually did a review during the summer, which you can read here. If you’d like to give the Scandaleyes Retro Glam Mascara a go for yourself, you can get it at Boots or Superdrug for around £6.99. With brands like Seventeen stepping up their game, I’m thinking Rimmel are getting a bit left behind – if they keep launching useless products like this, I’m going to be looking elsewhere for my makeup staples!
