SS16 Fashion: Hero Pieces

Hero Piece 1As you’ll know if you read my post earlier this week on Primark’s SS16 Collection, my sights are now firmly set on the season ahead of us and what fashion I’m going to be loving from now through til September. Now that I’m a bit older, I find that I’m much more into picking a couple of key pieces each season that will help me incorporate the trends, rather than buying 10 new things a week and not wearing any of them (ah my foolish – and skint – youth). Sometimes, deciding what exactly those key items should be is tricky, but thankfully intu has spoken to some of the fashion industry’s key insiders for advice and put together a whole feature on SS16 Hero Pieces to help us all out.

So, what do some of the country’s finest fashion experts think we need in our wardrobes this season? Well, since you asked…

Trainers

According to Kut Geiger’s Creative Director – posh name claxon – Rebecca Farrar-Hockley, the shoe of the season is the fashionable trainer. I’m ALL over this, especially as I’ve got a couple of walking-heavy trips planned this spring and would love for my feet not to be shredded by sandals or uncomfortable pumps. I love the slogan skate shoes featured in the image above, but also love classic Nikes that could actually double up as gymwear. I know, I’ve become so sensible in my old age…

Printed Trousers

Phoebe Horner, stylist at House of Fraser says that this season is all about the printer trouser (or a pair, preferably). Snakeskin print get the ultimate fashion nod – the Bet Lynch in me is shrieking with happiness – and we’re advised to opt for a high-waisted cut with shorter leg lengths to avoid making our legs look stumpy.

Hero Piece 2Pinafores

I felt a bit smug when I saw this mentioned, as I showed off this pinafore OOTD on my Instagram a couple of weeks ago. Mel Mercer, Design Director at Dorothy Perkins, says that the pinny is the one item that sums up spring/summer this year. Following her picks, I definitely want to add to my collection with some pinafores in lighter fabrics and retro patterns, and want to try them on their own as well as with tops layered underneath.

70s Inspired Boho

If you started stocking up on fringing and flares last summer, then rejoice because the 70s trend is sticking around. According to intu’s own Content Editor, Katie Ecclestone, a boho-inspired bag is the easiest way to update your look with this trend. I for one am very happy that my shearling denim jacket can make a reappearance.

Bomber Jackets

Finally, we’ve got the hero piece that I personally am most excited about: the bomber jacket. Eleanor Wheeler, Marketing Manager at Boohoo, says that she’ll be taking hers into her night out wardrobe as well as wearing it casually in the day, and I am so on board with this (even if it will be the first time I’ve even taken a jacket on a night out with me in about 4 years). I love the classic khaki colour, but am tempted to try something a bit different with a bronze/nude shade. As the bomber is definitely my number 1 hero piece for SS16, I’ve picked some of my favourites below for your perusal…

To celebrate the arrival of Spring, Intu are also creating some amazing events at their shopping centres over the next couple of months. The Style Garden will be making an appearance at the centres, and will be in my local centre of Merry Hill this week. I’m making a trip to Merry Hill this Friday to see the Style Garden in its full floral glory, and also to take advantage of the offers that are on over the bank holiday weekend – so expect a SS16 haul post coming very soon!

These are the expert’s hero pieces for SS16, but what are yours? Let me know in the comments!
