3 of the Best Everyday Lip Shades: MAC, Bourjois & Collection

Lips 1

There are some girls out there who are confident rocking a statement lip everyday; slicking on fuchsias, reds and purples with gay abandon. I, however, am what’s known in the industry as a ‘coward’. Bold lip colours are so risky; what if I clash, what if I get it in my hair, what if people mistake me for a clown? I prefer to stick to neutral lips on most days, and so usually have at least 8 different lip products floating around my bag at any one time, all slightly different shades of  nude and pale pink.

There are 3 that I’m currently reaching for most at the moment that I decided to share with my fellow neutral-loving chicas. They’re all from different brands and are in very different price brackets, so there’s something for all the Fancy Nancys and Cheap Chelseas out there. Let’s begin with the cheapest of the 3, which has been a staple in my makeup bag for years…

Lips 4Collection Lock ‘n’ Hold Lipgloss in Urban Punk – £2.99, Boots

I know some people find lipglosses a bit dated, and considering I think I first picked this up when I was still a teenager it should really be very dated. However, I just can’t let go of a decent, easy to apply nude lip gloss, and this one from Collection does the job. Lauren gave the Rock Steady shade a mixed verdict when she reviewed it here, but I will say that Urban Punk is a slightly warmer, less milky shade than Rock Steady, making it more wearable. The 6 hour wear claims are, as Lauren said, really high on the nonsense-ometer, and I apply this lipgloss fairly regularly throughout the day. But despite that, I always like how it feels on my lips, like the colour, and when it does fade it does so evenly and still leaving a nice sheen.

For £2.99 this is a cheap and cheerful lipgloss that I think still does a lot better than a lot of its similarly-priced rivals.

Lips 3Bourjois Rouge Edition Lipstick in Beige Trench – £7.99 from Boots

Although it’s a drugstore brand, I always find Bourjois to be the slightly pricier end of the scale and so don’t usually get much from them. However, I fell in love with this shade during a recent swatching frenzy and had to have it. Although it looks very brown in this photo, it’s actually a cool-toned nude. With a slightly purple undertone to it, it gives quite a 90s effect while still being basic. This is the first of the Bourjois Rouge Edition lipsticks I’ve tried and I have to say, I am super impressed. The formula is creamy and moisturising, and lasts well without flaking. I still think paying £8 for a lipstick is a bit steep (you know Cheap Chelsea I mentioned earlier? SURPRISE, SHE’S ME!), but for an everyday colour that you know you can rely on, I suppose it’s worth it. It’s also double worth it if you can buy it while there’s a Buy One Get One Half Price offer on, like I did (Chelsea wins, hurray).

Lips 2MAC Cremesheen Lipstick in Crème Cup – £15.50 from MAC

Finally, we have the brand that really needs no introduction. I recently added Crème Cup to my pitifully small MAC lipstick collection as I was looking for a neutral shade for my sister’s wedding, but wanted something slightly pinkier than my beloved nudes Crème D’Nude and and Pret-A-Pretty (which can look a bit foundation-lip-esque if over-applied). Once again ignore the darkness of the photo; Crème Cup is the perfect pastel pink. My toes curl at the cliche phrase ‘my lips but better’ but unfortunately that’s probably the best way to describe this shade. The Cremesheen formula is smooth and moisturising, though I do think you have to be careful when re-applying if you have any dry patches on your lips. Other than this though, it is of course HEAVEN in a lip case, and the typical vanilla scent will have you belting out “I’M SO FANCY” to any passers by.

MAC Pret-a-Pretty | Review & Swatches

MAC 1Hey there soul sisters. Today I’ve got absolutely nothing revolutionary to say, and my whole post can be summed up with these words:

Here is a MAC lipstick and it’s effing fabulous.

Which is what all MAC lipstick reviews basically say, isn’t it? Regardless though, I do find these simple lipstick reviews extremely useful when it comes to MAC – I mean, one of these babies will now set you back at least £15 (someone pick Granny off the floor, she’s keeled over in shock) and so you if you’re buying online you definitely want as much info as possible before you part with your precious cash. I was lucky enough to pick this little beaut up from a blog sale recently for the much more reasonable price of £8, but I still checked out a few swatches online.

This lipstick is part of the Sheen Supreme range from MAC, which promises to combine the colour and pigmentation of a lipstick with the moisturising sheen of a gloss. Hybrid products like these are always a win with me, having not quite given up my love of lip glosses despite knowing that lipsticks are the way forward for my older, more mature self.

Pret-a-Pretty is a pinky nude, making it so completely up my street that it’s practically on my doorstep. Despite the fine line that exists between a classic Brigitte Bardot nude lip and a ‘foundation lip’, it will always be my favourite shade for a lipstick. As my beloved MAC Creme D’Nude has officially bit the dust (I was using it right up until the ‘scraping out of the tube’ end, dear readers) I definitely needed a replacement, and Pret-a-Pretty is perfect for the job.

MAC 5With Flash / Without Flash

As you can see, even without the flash the lipstick still has a beautiful sheen to it. The formula is thick and creamy, making it really moisturising and it smells all vanilla-y and expensive. My one criticism of Pret-a-Pretty, which I assume is probably the same across the Sheen Supreme range due to the formula, is that staying power isn’t brilliant. When left it can stay on the lips for a couple of hours, but it transfers quite easily when eating or drinking. C’est la vie. Le bibliotheque. Jambon. That’s enough French for now.

MAC 4Overall, Pret-a-Pretty is the perfect everyday shade – though unfortunately not at an everyday price for many of us. My plan is to not use this all the time with gay abandon as I did my Creme D’Nude and thus hopefully it’ll last a bit longer – but check out the usage already shown in the top picture, do we really think I can manage this? It’s like that advert where the kids aren’t supposed to eat the Haribo even though it’s right in front of them (which, FYI, is surely a sort of child abuse).

Do any of you own Pret-a-Pretty by MAC? What’s your favourite MAC lipstick?

If you read this blog regularly then you may know that I am girl who is on many quests. I’m on a quest for the perfect mascara, a quest to learn contouring, a quest to find something I love more than crop tops – I am basically the Zelda of the fashion and beauty blogging world. I am also on a quest to find brilliant nude lipsticks. I have raved before about what a fan I am of them, being an avid lover of all things neutral (except for Switzerland) (this is a joke; you Swiss girls have got it going awwwwn). View Full Post

MAC ‘Crème D’Nude’ Lipstick: Review

Right, so I’m aware that I’m about to make possibly one of the most shameful confessions that a beauty blogger can make, so I’ll blurt it out as quickly as possible:

ThisIsTheFirstMACLipstickIHaveOwned!

I know that this is very shocking news for the blog world, so I’ll try to explain myself. Firstly, I never used to be that into lipsticks on a day-to-day basis. Secondly, I prefer to stick to the same colour palette on my lips; as your standard blonde-hair-blue-eyes I think pale pinks and nudes have always worked best for me and so I just don’t get all that gaga over lipsticks.

However, one of my best friends got married a couple of weeks ago and I decided to invest in a decent lipstick for it. I wore a deep red maxi dress and so (surprise, surprise) decided I wanted a nude lipstick so as not to detract from the dress, and also so that I could wear my usual ridiculous false eyelashes with lashings of eyeliner. The lipstick needed to have staying power to last all day and night though, and also needed to be quite moisturizing as my lips have a tendency to get dry and so lipsticks can look cakey quite quickly.

So after much research I decided a MAC lipstick was the best option for me, in the Crème D’Nude shade.

MACCremeDNude

MAC Crème D’Nude: £14

I believe it’s one of their most popular shades, and I have to say that I am a new convert to this lipstick. The colour was just what I was looking for; nude without that ‘foundation lip’ effect that Snog Marry Avoid girls seem to like. It was subtle yet still made my face look more ‘done up’ than if I’d just gone for a gloss or (shudder) au naturale.

These pictures make it look slightly more pink than it actually is in real life, but hopefully conveys the sheen and natural shade the lipstick provides.

It also lasted really well, felt really moisturizing on my lips and smelt lovely too (I would say it has a cocoa butter-y smell; this is probably completely wrong and I would waft it under Lauren’s nose for a second opinion but I don’t want to risk it touching her nostril). It’s become a staple of my makeup bag in just the couple of weeks since I’ve owned it, seeing as it’s so wearable on an everyday basis. I’m also already counting down the days til payday so I can justify my next MAC purchase – for blogging review purposes, of course…
